Vizio auto search skips channels

I have Vizio 37XL. When I recently auto searched it found 24 analog
and 47 digital channels with my OTA antenna. However, it did ignore
NBC 4-1 and 4-2 which I was receiving perfectly well till today with
the previous auto search performed a week ago. Is there a way to
add channels? The only choice on the menu is to remove
channels. I do not see any way to select a digital channel which was
not discovered during auto search.

Some sets allow you to type in the channel number directly. Since it
didn't find it in scan, you would likely have to type in the actual
digital channel number. Other sets don't allow it but it costs nothing
to try. It's hard to belive there is _no_ way to manually add a
channel.

Where do you live? Some stations will change their DTV channels no later
than Feb 18, 2009. Maybe yours changed early. If you are speaking of 4.1
and 4.2 in NYC or LA, they will remain on their present DTV channels.

Of all the NBC channels associated with analog channel 4, only the ones
in Greenville, SC, and San Antonio will change their present DTV channel.

Visit the link in Alan F's post of 1/31/08, 11:12 PM.

No station is changing this early, except for a handful that have shut
down their analog signal because of equipment failure or tower problems.
Cass, what city are you in and what is the NBC station call sign? If you
know the call sign, go to wikipedia, enter the station call sign such as
WRC-TV or KNBC-TV, and see what the actual digital broadcast channel is.

This morning I disconnected the antenna and did the auto search
getting 0 analog and 0 digital channels thus
clearing the memory. Then I reconnected the antenna and auto
searched again. Now it picked all the missing channels including 4.1
and 4.2. Vizio does not seem to have a way to manually add channels
or manually select a digital channel with the remote if it has not
been previously found by auto search. If somebody
knows how to do it please post.

Re: Vizio auto search skips channels

If you added a channel number, chances are that it would be the
*virtual* channel number. Then the TV would have to scan all the
channels anyway, examining their PSID information, until it found the
correct one.

I think that people such as us -- the ones who have knowledge of a
station's *physical* channel -- are an extremely small minority. That
doesn't make it worthwhile for manufacturers to build an "add physical
channel" option into their televisions.

Depends on the ATSC tuner, but some models will add a digital station
if you manually enter the actual digital broadcast channel and it finds
a station there. Use antennaweb.org, tvfool.com, wikipedia (using the
station call sign), or even the FCC data base
(http://www.fcc.gov/mb/video/tvq.html) to find the actual digital
broadcast channel. If you have a dual NTSC/ATSC tuner, entering 33.1 -
if the remote has a "." option - sometimes works.

I have a Vizio VX20L and noticed the same thing. An annoying flaw to an
otherwise good little TV. At least my 42" Sony plasma and LG DVR made it
much easier to add channels without forcing you to do a full rescan, then
disable ones that you don't want.

The problem is model specific. There is no way to enter manually
e.g. 4.1 on
my Vizio.

And heres a current list of the current digital station, with both their
virtual and actual channels. Handy to have if your looking for a
channel...its large, takes a bit to load.

I just realized that adding a channel may not be straightforward on
any set. E.g., 4-1 in NYC area is assigned UHF frequency of channel
28. In another area it would be a different frequency. Also the TV
would have to know the identifying tags e.g., NBC-HD and so on.

Same deal on my VX32, however, I noticed that a previously unscanned HD
channel showed up on it's own one day (without a forced scan). So, not sure
if the firmware does some sort of auto detection when you're cycling through
channels with the remote?
